Our last show: Casa de Las Tradiciones
Saturday, October 18, 2003

Our last show started at 9pm, and it was packed. Most everyone there I knew: I’ve gotten to know the people of Tivoli very well. They were a great audience - they loved my Afro-Cuban arrangement of “Softly in a Morning Sunrise”! After our set, Los Cumbancheros played. I danced and sat in for one song, “El Manisero.” Mostly I played the part of the benevolent American bartender, pouring drinks all night long and socializing with everyone. It’s the Cuban way. What a great night! We left at 1:30am and went to a friend’s house for pasta. We didn’t get home until 3:30am, after one more car ride with Fidel and some of Los Cumbancheros - the group of us singing “Guantanamera” (complete with personalized verses) with the window down through the dark alleys of Santiago. A night worthy of one’s last night in Cuba.

Los Cumbancheros perform "Retorna" from their album, La Cuna del Son
