The city tour
Friday, October 17, 2003

Our last day - we’re taking a city tour, including lunch at El Morro.

San Juan Hill- the monuments and plaques speak of the “Spanish-American-Cuban War” and attest to the essential role that the Cubans played in securing the victory for the US.

Monumento Antonio Maceo- a mulato general from Spanish-American War. Fabulous example of Communist art. The airport in Santiago is named after him. Behind us is the Heredia Theatre.

Mausoleum of Jose Marti- great timing! We caught the changing of the guard ceremony. There are many famous Cubans buried here. I wish I could take pictures - too many government officials around. Would love to have walked around and looked at all the graves. Maybe next time.

El Barrito, Casa del Ron- Sampling and buying rum. Great stuff, including beautiful black coral jewelry.

El Castillo Morro San Pedro de la Roca- Last minute shopping. Already have tons of pictures of this place. The great restaurant was closed - lack of business, or so I heard. Enjoying instead conversation with our “private” taxi-driver, Fidel.

Taberna del Ron
address: Carniceria, entre San Basilico y Santa Lucia, Santiago de Cuba.
