The language barrier slowly crumbles
Saturday, October 11, 2003

I’m slowly slipping back into Spanish. Peter and one member of our band are more fluent than I: it’s a good thing I’ve become used to talking to people, otherwise I might rely on the real Spanish speakers in the group and not improve my Spanish at all. Cubans are very nice: one told me today that Americans are the only foreigners who help out the Cubans. That was a pleasant surprise. Nonetheless, the solicitors can seem to be ubiquitous and rather persistent in Havana. One can’t blame them, though: there are some to whom even struggling musicians appear rich. Kind of makes me reconsider the phrase “struggling artist.”
